Cost-effective solution with strong network security features and VPN capabilities

What is our primary use case? I use FortiGate VM primarily to enhance network security within our environment. It acts as a primary firewall. What is most valuable? FortiGate VM provides valuable network security features that are effective in enhancing our security posture. The ease of deployment and management is commendable. Its VPN capabilities support our remote workforce effectively. Monitoring and cost-effectiveness are also significant areas where it helps. AI integration has not been tested yet. What needs improvement? Interoperability could be improved. The API needs better integration to match accounts and objects more effectively. VPN capabilities present some issues, and configuration and customization could be refined. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using FortiGate VM for four years now. What do I think about the stability of the solution? I rate the stability of the solution at eight out of ten. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? I rate the scalability of the solution at nine out of ten. How are customer service and support? I rate technical support at eight out of ten. Their support is helpful and effective. How would you rate customer service and support? Positive Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? I switched from another vendor to FortiGate VM, which has significantly reduced our operational costs. How was the initial setup? The initial setup was easy, and I did it myself without requiring assistance from third-party services. What about the implementation team? Two engineers from our side were involved in the installation process. What was our ROI? I observed a fifty to sixty percent reduction in operational costs after migrating to FortiGate VM. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? I find the pricing of FortiGate VM to be quite affordable. Which other solutions did I evaluate? Purchase options enable long-term cost savings by saving on capital expenditures

What is our primary use case? I mostly use FortiGate VM for securing cloud databases or internal in-house databases. It serves as the main perimeter firewall in our data centers. What is most valuable? FortiGate VM allows me to avoid the hardware lease recycle every five to eight years. I can purchase the VM, lock the hardware cost, and simply pay for licensing each year. This saves on capital expenditures in the long run. It can be upgraded or downgraded as needed. If the organization grows, a partial license can increase the device's capacity. What needs improvement? The previous version 5.6 had integrated features for logging, monitoring, and management. Now, these features require separate products like FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer, and a FortiCloud subscription for reporting. Many users are now turning to Sophos for the integrated features that were once part of Fortinet but are now separate. For how long have I used the solution? I have been working with FortiGate VM for three to four years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? I would rate the stability as eight out of ten. Previously, patches had fewer bugs, however, recently they have had more, requiring internal testing to ensure deployment stability. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? Scalability is an excellent selling point for FortiGate VM. It can start with a single core and scale up to a 32-core license for a robust deployment. How are customer service and support? Organize networks efficiently while benefiting from strong reliability and support

What is our primary use case? The main use is for clients who are migrating to the cloud. We started this journey during the pandemic, and the main case is with clients who are moving to either a private or a public cloud. What is most valuable? The solution allows us to organize our networks and access within one vendor, using an integrated platform. The more integrated we become, the less we spend on solving bugs and issues, allowing us to reduce time focusing on understanding and improving our network. We value the reliability and versatility. For how long have I used the solution? I have used the solution for two years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Fortinet offers stability with fewer fixes and adjustments needed compared to other solutions like SonicWall. How are customer service and support? Customer service and support are very good. I would rate them a nine on a scale of one to ten. How would you rate customer service and support? Positive Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? I had a small experience with SonicWall. The main difference is Fortinet's stability, requiring fewer adjustments. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is easy. Has enables a reduction in our security budget

What is our primary use case? We use FortiGate as the edge firewall. We integrate it with our APIs over Microsoft Azure. We work in the VOIP industry, and our services are prone to latency. Security is a major concern for us as a U.S. research company, where we frequently test attacks. FortiGate handles these attacks well. How has it helped my organization? FortiGate has led to a reduction in our security budget. Our management decided to switch to FortiGate because it offers all the necessary features and even improved features within our budget. What is most valuable? I'm looking forward to FortiGate's dashboard features, insights, application oversight, and monitoring, which could help us significantly. What needs improvement? As of now, I haven't identified areas for improvement. However, once the firewall is in production and all traffic is shifted, I might be able to provide more feedback. The configuration part was challenging, especially converting configurations from another OEM to FortiGate. For how long have I used the solution? Intuitive with a user-friendly interface that simplifies network tasks

What is our primary use case? I used it as an IT provider, and our main firewall was the Fortinet series FortiGate. Currently, I am just a user on the end user side of the fence. How has it helped my organization? The Fortinet gear is really easy to use, intuitive, and pretty powerful. It has been great because we haven't had to change it out very much. The operational return on investment has been great as we don't have to keep replacing it. What is most valuable? I really liked the interface because it was extremely user-friendly. Unlike Cisco, where you didn't need to be certified to use the interface effectively. The consistency across all models has also been beneficial as it simplifies learning and usage. They put in a thing called the FortiCookbook, which is very easy to read with real-life scenarios that make networking tasks like joining networks very straightforward. What needs improvement? I just don't like giving products ten out of ten. There's always something new that can be added or fixed. For how long have I used the solution? I have been working with the Fortinet FortiGate overall since 2006, which is quite a few years now. What do I think about the stability of the solution? We haven't had to change it out very much. It has been stable and reliable for us. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? I would rate its scalability as a nine out of ten. They scale up really well from smaller models like the FortiGate 40 and 50 to bigger sites with the FortiGate 100 for more throughput - up to enterprise datacenters. How are customer service and support? Customer support is quite good. We purchased the 24/7 support, and they usually respond within an hour, even in the middle of the night. Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch? I haven't switched from FortiGate. We still use the Fortinet solution as our firewall. How was the initial setup? The initial setup is very straightforward and easy, with wizards helping to configure the device efficiently. What was our ROI? The ROI has been very good because it's operationally efficient, and we haven't needed to replace the equipment frequently. What other advice do I have? I would definitely recommend it to other businesses with similar security needs. For smaller businesses with just a couple of computers, the standard ISP-supplied modems are fine. Effective threat prevention with responsive customer support

What is our primary use case? We are using Fortinet FortiGate as a firewall. How has it helped my organization? Fortinet FortiGate has been invaluable. It has helped save costs due to its various features, reliable performance, very good UI, low latency, and stability. What is most valuable? The Threat Intel engine in Fortinet FortiGate is highly rated for its effectiveness in threat prevention. It has a good UI and overall integration, including FortiGate Manager for controlling all firewalls from a single place. What needs improvement? The anti-malware engine could use an upgrade. It should automatically classify and sandbox malicious packets with more granular controls, including providing details like TV numbers. What do I think about the stability of the solution? Initially, we faced some issues with updates due to network factors needing to be white-listed in the proxy. These problems have since been resolved, and we are not facing any issues now. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? While I don't have a clear picture of scalability, we scale up in different regions based on the number of users and the amount of load. I like the solution's IPS, IDS, and URL filtering

What is our primary use case? We use FortiGate-VM as a firewall. My company has more than 4,000 users, and we plan to increase usage. What is most valuable? I like FortiGate's IPS, IDS, and URL filtering. What needs improvement? I think Fortinet should provide us with more reporting from the AI/ML point of view. They could also offer the SaaS application in a single box. The VPN and ZTNA have so many verticals that they work as a standalone solution. They need to be in a single box. For how long have I used the solution? I have worked with FortiGate-VM for the last three years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? I rate FortiGate-VM eight out of 10 for stability. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? From a scalability point of view, we have a physical user license. If we need to upgrade, we can get a box. There is presently sufficient formal organization to scale up. How are customer service and support? I have no problems with Fortinet support. We deployed FortiGate-VM with the help of a partner and the vendor. The deployment process took three months. We previously used Cisco ASA and had no migration tool, so we had to start from scratch. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? FortiGate-VM is affordable. In terms of operating costs, we contract with the OEM for a three-year contract and then renew. We haven't received any notice from them because all of our infrastructure is under contract. Every three years, if we cannot get a good price from the vendor, we replace the box. What other advice do I have? I rate Fortinet FortiGate-VM eight out of 10. It has all the features. The only recommendation is to combine the vertical into a single box. Helps segregate the VLANs in the data center, but it needs to improve on the security part

What is our primary use case? I use the solution in my company for the data center's server protection to segregate the data center VLANs and the other VLANs used in the production, testing, and development phases, including the areas consisting of DMZ and VLAN. We are using Fortinet FortiGate-VM as a software-based tool and as a firewall for our data center. What is most valuable? It filters out the unnecessary connectivity that I would probably expect to be connected from the end user site or from external to the data center site. It is also used to filter unauthorized access to sites and to mitigate risks if, in cases, because of the asset policy, the remote desktop connectivity or remote connectivity is not allowed to restrict something. It is used to deal with phishing or something that may not pass through the network. The tool serves as an industrial firewall so that we can use it as a filter more efficiently. What needs improvement? The security offered by the tool has certain shortcomings, making it in area where improvements are required. Security, by nature, is very dynamic, and continuous improvement is required. Every time, the policy and the configuration need to be checked in that aspect now, so in that aspect, it needs some improvement, especially when it comes to some filtering mechanisms, and protocols. For how long have I used the solution? I have been using Fortinet FortiGate-VM for more than three years. What do I think about the stability of the solution? In terms of stability, it is stable. Stability-wise, I rate the solution an eight out of ten. What do I think about the scalability of the solution? It is scalable because it is a virtual appliance. You can probably scale it up more. Fortinet FortiGate-VM is a security solution, so users are not expected to access it. It is actually required to protect the network and the environment, so there is no need for actual user access for the solution. How was the initial setup? The product's initial setup phase requires some special expertise. The initial setup phase might not be complex, but it requires experts since it is a security solution. If there is an expertise that is actually doing the implementation or deployment, then it is a straightforward process. What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing? The solution requires a license. The tool is neither expensive nor cheap, so it is okay. What other advice do I have? The product's implementation does affect our compliance with industry regulations, and it is one of the reasons why we prefer using Fortinet FortiGate-VM. My suggestion to other people related to the tool depends on their requirements because there are other different solutions in terms of cost, efficiency, security, reliability, and security. Depending on the requirements, the tool is recommendable. Fortinet is one of the top security solutions in the market. Anybody can choose from multiple tools in the market, including Palo Alto products and other solutions. Fortinet is usually recommended to others. I think that Fortinet FortiGate-VM has some solutions that offer AI features. For our use case, we don't actually use the AI functionalities since we want to control everything.
