What is Server Virtualization
Server virtualization is a method of running multiple independent virtual operating systems on a single physical computer. Virtualization allows users to maximize physical resources to take best advantage of their hardware investment. This process enables the transformation of hardware into software, i.e., "virtualize" the hardware resources on an x86-based server and components - including the CPU, RAM and hard drives. This creates a single virtual server that can safely run several operating systems and applications at the same time on a single computer.
Which Level of Server Virtualization is Right for Me?
Server virtualization can help lower your costs by optimizing utilization while increasing agility. This enables you to respond rapidly to changes in the marketplace. There are four primary levels of server virtualization that address these issues:
Server Consolidation - Bring unmanageable server sprawl under control by using server consolidation to run multiple workloads on fewer servers and to reduce future needs for physical servers.
Software Automation - Transform the software lifecycle by using virtualization to reduce costs, increase productivity, and improve quality in development and test.
Business Continuity - Reduce downtime by making high availability and disaster recovery solutions more cost-effective, simpler and more reliable.
Desktop Manageability/Security - Improve manageability and security of desktops to lower costs, reduce risk, and improve flexibility of desktop infrastructure.
Why Virtualize?
Server virtualization allows you to consolidate the workloads of multiple underutilized servers onto a single physical server. The benefits of software-enabled virtualization include:
Increased Server Utilization
Apply resources only where needed, based on application demand.
Fewer Servers
Consolidate and reduce the number of physical servers that need administration and maintenance.
Greater Availability
Migrate applications from one server to another without taking down applications.
Added System Flexibility
Select the right operating system for your applications.
Complete Management
Leverage content management capabilities such as versioning, access control, workflow, lifecycle management, and other content services available throughout the Documentum system.
Standardization
Use a uniform platform to configure applications once and roll out multiple times.
Simplified Deployment
Test new applications and software upgrades centrally, then quickly deploy them without configuring new servers.
